As the game progresses, the role of the umpire in helping to ensure matches are played safely and to the rules are needed at all levels of the game. That’s why at England Netball we recognise the need to provide officials with a portfolio of courses and workshops that are packed with expert knowledge, covering all areas of umpire and technical official’s development.

Our Officiating Pathway allows officials to plot their own learner journey through a range of qualifications, helping them to fulfil their officiating potential.

Intro to Umpiring

Welsh Netball offers a basic introductory umpiring course.

The course is particularly useful for the beginner/inexperienced candidate that would like to gain basic umpiring knowledge.
This is an attendance only course.

Candidates will receive a Welsh Netball rules book and an Intro to Umpiring pack.
This is a 4 hour course.

Course Details

All education courses close one month prior to the first day of any course. Candidates must have submitted a completed booking form along with payment prior to the deadline.
Please note our cancellation policy – If you do not attend the course without giving 7 days’ notice no refunds or transfers will be given.

Entry Requirements

  • You must be 13 years of age, have a basic knowledge of the netball game and understanding of the rules.
  • During the course you will be expected to take part in the practical game of netball.
  • Please bring a whistle, hairband/elastic band and a pen to the course.

C Award

This is the first step on the umpire qualification ladder.

Welsh Netball offer a Level One Umpire course to enable potential candidates to start the process of becoming a IFNA C Award Umpire.

The course includes theory and practical elements, including a detailed understanding of the rules and umpire protocols that all qualified umpires must adhere to.

This is a six hour course run over one day.

To qualify as a FENA C Award Umpire candidates must complete the following:

  • Attend a six hour Level One umpire course.
  • Complete a 30+ minute Practical assessment.
  • Complete a 30 minute Theory assessment.

Fitness assessment: bleep test level 4.5 minimum.

Entry Requirement

  • You must be at least 13 years of age to attend a C Award theory course.
  • You must be a minimum of 14 years of age at completion of the practical assessment of the course.
  • You must have undertaken a Welsh Netball Q Award course.
  • You must have a good knowledge of the game of netball and show a good understanding of the rules.
  • During the course you will be expected to take part in the practical game of netball.
  • Bring a whistle, hairband/elastic band and a pen to the course.

B Award

This is the second step on the umpire ladder for experienced C umpires that want to progress further.

Welsh Netball offer a Level 2 Umpire Course to enable C Award Umpires to progress onto the IFNA B Award umpire.

The course includes theory and practical elements, including an indepth understanding of the rules and umpire protocols that all international qualified umpires must adhere to.

The level 2 course is a 8 hour course and all 8 hours run over 1 day.

To qualify as a FENA B Award Umpire candidates must complete the following:

  • Attend a eight hour Level Two umpire course.
  • Complete a 60 minute Practical assessment.
  • Complete a B Theory assessment.
  • Fitness assessment: bleep test level 6.5 minimum.

Theory Test Papers for A and B Awards take place during February, May and November each year.

A Award

  • Applicants must be holders of the B Award (or IFNA equivalent).
  • Candidates must be recommended by their Regional Development Officer or National Association.
  • Complete a 60 minute Practical assessment.
  • Complete a A Award Theory assessment.
  • Fitness assessment: bleep test level 8.5 minimum.
